Two Journeys, One Promise
The Story of the Sentinel
In my book, Two Journeys, One Promise, I introduce you to the Great Blue Heron. In the scientific community, we call him an "Indicator Species," but I call him the Sentinel. Because Herons are apex predators in the Cuyahoga Valley, their health is a direct reflection of our water quality.
Through the story, I explore the "Invisible Fog"—the non-point source pollution from our own backyards—and the "False Food" of microplastics that threaten our river. This book isn't just a story; it’s a tool for environmental empathy, designed to help students aged 7 to 14 move from awareness to active stewardship.
A Recognition of Impact
I am incredibly honored that this project received the Presidents' Award at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) during the Metamorphosis Cleveland event. This award highlights the project's dedication to climate justice and sustainability. It serves as a reminder that our local actions in Ohio are part of a global conversation; a bird saved in the Cuyahoga River is a gift to the ecosystems as far away as the wetlands of Uruguay.

My Vision: A Space for Neuro-Inclusive Growth
My journey doesn't end on the page. I am currently designing a future that bridges regenerative living with inclusive education through the construction of a Cob home and school.
Regenerative Building (Cob)
Sustainability, to me, is about "remembering" how to live within the circle. Cob building—using local earth, straw, and water—is a form of bioconstruction that is carbon-neutral and non-toxic. It represents a "closed-loop" lifestyle where our structures are made of the same materials that support the river, ensuring no industrial waste ever reaches the Heron's home.
Designing for the Neuro-Diverse Learner
As an educator, my goal is to create an environment where every student thrives. My future school in Uruguay will utilize biophilic design specifically tailored for neuro-diverse students:
-
Sensory Harmony: The organic, curved walls and natural acoustic insulation of Cob create a grounding, low-stimulus environment that reduces sensory overload.
-
Place-Based Learning: By incorporating "Mandala Gardens" and hands-on water monitoring, students engage in inquiry-based science that supports both the environment and their own cognitive health.
-
Connection to Nature: We utilize nature’s patterns to foster a sense of calm and focus, proving that humans can thrive without degrading the world around them.
"Sustainability isn't about inventing something new; it’s about 'remembering' how to live within the circle. When we remember our promise, the Sentinel returns to a healthy home."
