The "Science of Reading" (SoR) is more than just a pedagogical trend—it is a vast body of gold-standard research explaining how the human brain learns to read. While many assume literacy is strictly the domain of English departments, my academic journey has shown me that the foundations of reading are built through a diverse range of disciplines.

Through my studies in psychology, logic, and child development, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA in all core literacy-related coursework, providing me with a multi-faceted understanding of how we process language. Here is how my path reflects the pillars of literacy.

1. The Psychological Foundation

Key Courses: General Psychology, Child Growth & Development, Psychopathology

The Science of Reading is rooted in cognitive psychology. To understand how a child decodes a word, you must first understand how they develop cognitively.

  • My studies in Child Development provided insight into the "critical periods" of language acquisition.

  • General Psychology helped me understand the memory systems essential for moving a student from "sounding out" words to achieving the "automaticity" required for fluent reading.

2. Language, Structure, and Logic

Key Courses: Honors College Composition I & II, Introduction to Logic

Reading isn’t just about looking at letters; it’s about linguistic comprehension.

  • My Honors Composition courses sharpened my understanding of syntax and structure—the very "rules" of the English language that the SoR emphasizes we must teach explicitly.

  • Introduction to Logic provided a surprising bridge to literacy. Reading is a thinking task. Understanding the structure of an argument is the pinnacle of comprehension; if a student can’t follow the logic of a sentence, they aren’t truly "reading" it.

3. Background Knowledge & The "Reading Rope"

Key Courses: Lit for Children & Adolescents, Exploration of World Mythology, Creative Writing

A major component of Scarborough’s Reading Rope is Background Knowledge. You cannot understand a text if you don’t understand the world it describes.

  • In World Mythology, I explored the archetypes that form the foundation of Western literature.

  • In Lit for Children & Adolescents, I evaluated texts through the lens of developmental appropriateness

, ensuring that the "Language Comprehension" side of the literacy equation is rich and engaging.

Reflection: Mastery of the Core

My academic record reflects a deep commitment to the rigor that the Science of Reading demands. By maintaining a 4.0 GPA across my Psychology, English, and Honors Communications courses, I have built a rock-solid foundation in the sciences and humanities that inform modern literacy instruction.

Literacy is a civil right, and understanding the complex science behind it requires a dedication to excellence across every subject that touches the human experience.
