Two Journeys, One Promise: A Story of Healing, Home, and Hope

I am thrilled to finally share more about a project that is very close to my heart. My children's book, "Two Journeys, One Promise," recently received the Presidents’ Award at the 2026 Metamorphosis Cleveland contest. This recognition was such an honor, but the true reward has been the opportunity to weave together the two most important journeys of my life: the fight for our environment and my family’s path toward a more inclusive, sustainable future.
The Story: A Tale of Two Paths
The book follows two parallel narratives that eventually meet at the intersection of hope and action:
The Great Blue Heron: A resilient bird struggling to recover from the effects of industrial pollution in our local Ohio rivers.
The Family: This story shows my family navigating the complexities of modern pollutants, rescuing wildlife, all while preparing for a transformative move to Uruguay to build a sustainable, neuro-inclusive cob home.
As the "Heron Squad" works to advocate for the river, the family works to design a living space that honors both the Earth and the unique needs of every individual.
Themes: Why This Story Matters
I wrote this book because I believe that sustainability and accessibility are inseparable. We cannot heal the planet without also healing the ways we live and learn together. The story highlights:
Ecological Recovery: Showing that even damaged ecosystems can thrive again with advocacy and care.
Neuro-Affirming Living: Illustrating how a "home" should be a place of peace and accessibility for diverse processing styles.
Concrete Solutions: I wanted to show, not just tell. The book features real-world sustainability like closed-loop systems, water repurposing, and composting.
The Art and the Heart
Every page was brought to life using watercolor pencils and a bit of AI assistance on the backgrounds in order for me to make the competition deadline for submissions. I chose these mediums because of their organic, tactile feel—much like the cob and straw-bale structures I dream of building.
Whether we are in Ohio or on a hillside in Uruguay, the "promise" remains the same: to foster a future where nature and humanity grow together in harmony.
A Journey of Growth and Learning
The process of creating this book was not just about writing; it was about growth. I learned so much about storytelling, art, and the importance of our environment. Each chapter reflects my passion for teaching and sharing knowledge. I hope to inspire readers to embrace their own journeys, no matter how challenging they may seem.
